ATP – CTP Certification: Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Course

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO COMPLETE ATP-CTP COURSE

Even though the ATP-CTP course is required by candidates with an airline pilot license, it is also acceptable for a candidate to hold a private pilot certificate to register.  Upon successful completion of the ATP-CTP school, the candidate will receive a certificate valid indefinitely and he is able to take the ATP certification written exam which will be valid within five years.

Purpose of the ATP CTP Course

On August 1, 2010, President Obama signed a bill that introduced the ATP CTP training course. This course was designed to bridge the knowledge gap between the level of a 250-hour commercial pilot and a 1500-hour airline pilot. This knowledge gap in aviation education has proven fatal, such as the Colgan Air disaster near Buffalo in 2009. This accident sparked the FAA to mandate changes in the requirements for airline pilots. In January 2014, all United States carriers began to hire pilots with a minimum flight time of 1500 hours. These new hires were also required to hold a multi-engine airplane license, as well as having the ATP CTP course successfully completed.

The ATP CTP course is the most efficient way to gain eligibility for the ATP Multi-Engine (ATM) knowledge test and pursue Airline Transport Pilot certification.  This is a mandatory pre-requisite in order to take the ATP written exam. This requirement only applies to multi-engine pilots. The ATP CTP course is not required if obtaining the ATP Single Engine Certificate. Pilots that are ATP rated in foreign countries still need to complete the entire course and follow the syllabus, which is strictly regulated by the FAA under AC 61-138.
