Success Story:

From Dream to Fly – A Pilot’s Journey

Shahrom Sattorov

Self-funded student from Tajikistan who became a professional airline pilot in just 3 years. Graduate of SkyEagle Aviation Academy, now flying the Embraer ERJ-175 for SkyWest Airlines.

Hello Shahrom, it’s great to see you again! I’m happy and proud to see you progressing in your journey after starting at SkyEagle Aviation Academy.

Andrey, thank you so much! It truly means a lot to me. I’m proud to be a graduate of SkyEagle Academy – the training and support I received there built the foundation for everything I’ve achieved so far. It’s always great to reconnect and share this journey with you!

Where are you currently employed, which type of aircraft do you operate, and which airline do you work for?

I’m currently employed with SkyWest Airlines, flying the Embraer ERJ-175. SkyWest is the largest regional airline in the United States, operating a fleet of over 500 aircraft and conducting nearly 2,400 flights per day.

How much time passed from your initial PPL flight to securing employment with an airline?

I began my flight training in March 2022 and completed my Instrument Rating and Commercial Certificate by October 2022 at SkyEagle Aviation Academy. Afterward, I obtained my Flight Instructor rating and started working at SkyEagle in May 2023, continuing until April 2025. From my first flight as a student to landing a job with an airline, it took approximately three years.

What initially sparked your interest in aviation?

Becoming a pilot has been my dream since childhood. While the journey is filled with challenges, the reward at the end makes it all worthwhile.

Did you always know you wanted to be a pilot?

Yes, I’ve always envisioned myself as a pilot. There was a point where I nearly gave up on that dream, but I’m incredibly thankful I stayed committed. Perseverance truly paid off.

Were there any mentors who influenced your decision to pursue a career in aviation?

My family played a key role. They have supported me wholeheartedly from the very beginning and continue to do so today.

Can you share a specific experience that reignited your passion for aviation?

Growing up in Tajikistan, opportunities to become a pilot were extremely limited. Over time, my dream began to fade. But when I moved to the United States, that spark was reignited. I worked tirelessly with a single goal: to become a pilot, no matter the cost.

Did you always have a clear vision of how to become a pilot?

After doing thorough research, I developed a clear plan. I didn’t have anyone to support me financially in the U.S., and I didn’t take out a loan. I simply worked hard for several years, saved every penny, and then began my training – which I completed in one go.

And did you have any flight experience as a passenger before starting flight training?

Only a few commercial flights, but even then, I was deeply fascinated by aviation.

Describe the steps you took to pursue pilot training and achieve your goals.

I enrolled in flight training and progressed through PPL, Instrument, and Commercial certifications. I then earned my CFI and CFII ratings and began instructing. While instructing, I pursued my Multi-Engine and MEI ratings. Once I reached about 1,000 flight hours, I began applying to airlines. My first interview was with SkyWest Airlines, and I was fortunate to receive an offer.

Which program did you complete at SkyEagle Aviation Academy?

So here is my complete pilot training journey: Private Pilot (Part 141), Instrument Rating (Part 61), Commercial Certification (Part 61), Multi-Engine Rating, Multi-Engine Instructor Rating, ATP-CTP Course.

How did you prepare yourself mentally for the challenges of becoming a pilot?

Before starting training, I began reading aviation materials to familiarize myself with the terminology and expectations. I made it a habit to study the lesson plan before each session and come prepared with questions. This approach made a significant difference in my progress.

If you could add one crazy feature to your aircraft, what would it be?

That’s a fun one! When I was flying piston aircraft in Florida, I always wished they had air conditioning. It would completely transform the experience!

What hobbies or activities help you maintain a work-life balance?

Outside of flying, I love exploring new places and meeting new people. It keeps life exciting and refreshing.

What aspect of flying fascinates you most?

Visiting new destinations, tasting different cuisines, and seeing landscapes only visible from the cockpit – those are the most rewarding parts.

Could you share a memorable moment in your aviation career?

My first solo flight was unforgettable. Flying alone, talking to ATC, and landing the plane by myself was both thrilling and empowering.

What did you consider when choosing a flight academy?

Safety was my top priority. I also looked at aircraft condition, maintenance practices, training quality, price, location, and overall environment.  SkyEagle stood out for all the right reasons.

How did SkyEagle prepare you for the real-world challenges of aviation?

The curriculum is closely aligned with real-world flying. Training at KFXE (Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport) was particularly valuable.

Operating out of such a busy airport greatly enhanced my radio communication and situational awareness – key skills for any commercial pilot.

What financial tips would you give to self-funded students?

The financial aspect can greatly impact your mental focus. My advice: make sure you have enough saved to complete at least one course at a time. Avoid long breaks, as they tend to increase both training time and cost.

What advice would you give to new students starting their pilot journey?

Be patient, trust the process, and believe in yourself. Great things take time. Don’t fear obstacles – face them head-on, stay focused, and never lose sight of your goals.

What personal qualities are crucial for success in aviation?

Be open-minded, surround yourself with motivated people, develop a strong mindset, and never hesitate to ask for help. Mentorship and collaboration can make a huge difference.

Conclusion

This journey from dream to reality is more than just a success story – it’s a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of believing in yourself. Shahrom’s path reminds us that no matter where you come from or how impossible the dream may seem, with focus and determination, the sky is not the limit – it’s just the beginning.
