How Marlon King Went from Ramp Agent to Corporate Pilot

Marlon King

Certified Flight Instructor & Corporate Jet Pilot, trained at SkyEagle Aviation Academy

Congratulations, Marlon, on your successful aviation career! Could you tell us how your time at SkyEagle Aviation Academy influenced your development as a pilot?

SkyEagle Aviation Academy has played a major role in my journey. I earned my Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot License, and logged over 1,200 hours as a Certified Flight Instructor here. From my first day, I felt welcomed, and I knew this was the place for me. The people I’ve met here are some of the most talented professionals I’ve ever worked with, and many have become lifelong friends.

How long did it take to go from your first PPL flight to airline employment?

Exactly three years. I started my PPL training in April 2022 and began my airline training in April 2025.

Who were your key mentors?

My father was the first person to get me started in aviation by helping me secure my first job as a baggage agent. He supported me through every step, from education planning to career decisions. My cousin Marvin and my godfather Dan, both pilots at major carriers, also mentored me. They helped me sharpen my technical skills, prepared me for checkrides and interviews, and kept me motivated during tough times.

How did your pilot training journey unfold?

I actually began my aviation career in Aircraft Maintenance School because I couldn’t initially secure loans or earn enough income to pay for flight training. Becoming an Aircraft Technician allowed me to fund my training independently. After a few months working as a technician, I took out a $10,000 loan and started my PPL training – and the rest is history. I’m now planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree to further strengthen my credentials.

What excites you most about flying?

The constant challenge. Every flight is different. The thrill of flying an approach down to minimums, and the adventure of starting your day in one part of the world and ending it in another, is incredible. Few people get to experience that.

Were there any mentors who influenced your decision to pursue a career in aviation?

My family played a key role. They have supported me wholeheartedly from the very beginning and continue to do so today.

What’s the most beautiful view you’ve seen from the cockpit?

Aside from countless sunrises and sunsets, the most amazing sight was seeing a SpaceX shuttle launch while returning from Savannah, GA.

Which aircraft have you flown, and do you have a favorite?

I’ve flown the Piper Warrior/Archer, Cessna 172, Diamond DA-40, Grumman Tiger, Beechcraft Duchess, Piper Seminole, and the Citation Jet CJ4. The CJ4 is my favorite because it’s my first jet! My favorite piston aircraft is the DA-40.

How did you choose your aircraft type?

My company assigned me to the CJ4. They said, ‘This is what you’re flying,’ and I said, ‘Sounds good!’ So, in a way, the decision was made for me.

Describe the steps you took to pursue pilot training and achieve your goals.

I enrolled in flight training and progressed through PPL, Instrument, and Commercial certifications. I then earned my CFI and CFII ratings and began instructing. While instructing, I pursued my Multi-Engine and MEI ratings. Once I reached about 1,000 flight hours, I began applying to airlines. My first interview was with SkyWest Airlines, and I was fortunate to receive an offer.

What is your favorite aviation-themed movie?

I hope I don’t get judged for this, but “American Made” is my favorite!

What do you enjoy outside of flying?

I love working out, running, hiking, snorkeling, and soon, scuba diving. Sleeping might be my favorite hobby!

How do you adapt when flying different aircraft?

The basics remain the same: power for altitude, pitch for airspeed. Checklist discipline is key. Staying ahead of the aircraft is critical, especially as speed and complexity increase. Chair flying helps me adapt efficiently to new aircraft.

How did you prepare yourself mentally for the challenges of becoming a pilot?

Before starting training, I began reading aviation materials to familiarize myself with the terminology and expectations. I made it a habit to study the lesson plan before each session and come prepared with questions. This approach made a significant difference in my progress.

How did Sky Eagle Aviation Academy prepare you for real-world flying?

Training in the busy South Florida airspace taught me how to handle congested radio communications and high traffic volumes. Many of the airports I used as a student and instructor are the same ones I now fly into as a corporate jet pilot. SkyEagle also taught me sound aeronautical decision-making and how to give passengers a positive flight experience.

What was your experience with the instructors like?

Fantastic. SkyEagle selects instructors who are genuinely invested in student success. Even instructors who weren’t directly assigned to me offered guidance and support. Many became great friends and even helped me network for job opportunities.

What advice do you have for new students?

Have backup plans. A, B, C, D, and E. Things won’t always go perfectly, so be ready to adapt. Study hard and treat every lesson, checkride, and interview seriously. What you learn could one day save your life or your passengers’ lives. But most importantly, enjoy the journey.
